*Throughout America Elected Officials and School Divisions are Taking Steps and Implementing Policies to Limit, Restrict or Eliminate Teaching the Truth about Black History in Public Schools. “A People Without the Knowledge of their Past History, Origin and Culture is Like a Tree Without Roots” (by Marcus Garvey). So, as we enter into the month that is designated as “Black History Month” we ask the question who cares? The perception is Parents don’t talk about it! Kids don’t read about it! Schools don’t teach it! Very few blacks visit the Spotsylvania John J. Wright historical museum. So, where does black history fit in? The new Governor in Virginia continue to express his desire to limit the espousal of students to the truth about black history.  Do we as a people really want to know our history? How much black history do you know? Have you ever sat down with your kids or grandkids and mentioned anything about black history?  How about You! What history are you making? Are You helping to improve or make something better for someone else? What is Your legacy going to be? How will Your kids remember You?  A tree without roots will float away and eventually be gone from our view. Are blacks and their history fading away? These are questions we ask you to ask yourself. How do you feel about black history? Does it really matter?  Have we allowed many of those great successes obtained through blood, sweat and tears fall by the wayside or slip away?  Do you want to make a difference in your community and create your own legacy? Join us as we create history! Contact us at 540-847-7637.

*Branch Will Host a Community Conversation on February 25, from 11am to 1:00 p.m.  The forum will provide information and offer opportunities to share comments and recommendations on the status of the minority community in Spotsylvania.

*New Officers & Members Training is Rescheduled. New date will be provided later.

*Branch Calls for an Emergency Meeting With Parents to Address Increasing Violence in Schools.  Since the beginning school in August of last year there have been over 50 fights involving over 75 children. This has prompted law enforcement to announce that they will add additional deputies to monitor the school. The NAACP believes the aforementioned activity demands parents’ action and intervention. In an effort to address this issue the branch will conduct a “Emergency Town Hall” meeting for parents and concerned citizens on February 11, 9-11 am at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. The church is located at 6030 Harrison Road, 22407. Please encourage all parents of students to attend this meeting. For more information call 540-847-7637.

*This Month is an Excellent Time to Visit the John J. Wright Educational and Cultural Museum. The museum provides a wealth of information, antique artifacts, old pictures, and lots of history about the African American citizens of Spotsylvania County. The following is a list of activities that will be presented during the month of February: The museum will open each Saturday from 10 am to 1:00 pm.  The museum will feature exhibits from the Devine 9 Historical Black Sororities and Fraternities as well as display the “Tools of the Trade” used by the Lewis family each weekend in February. A book signing will be conduct on February 18 by Abbiegail Hamilton Huge the Author of “Something in the Water” and former 1st Lady of Alabama A&M University and retired educator-administrator.
